If left to nature open areas within woodland will start to revert back to tree cover through a process called succession. To prevent this happening the scrub can be removed on a annually, biannually or as necessary. Scrub removal is carried out for a number of reasons, to improve the aesthetics of woodland, prevent the trees from encroaching on another different habitat (e.g. grass or heath) or to improve access into the woodland.

The woodland edge in this photo had been cut and the material just piled up as deadwood. This not only caused the woodland edge to look unsightly but enabled brambles to establish.

All material was chipped and scattered in the woodland to break down naturally and add nutrients back into the soil. It will now be possible to mow the area on a biannual cycle to encourage more wildlife.
